When it comes to play-to-earn games, Axie Infinity steals the show! As the first NFT gaming title to cross $1 billion in sales, it is credited for putting \u201cplay-to-earn<\/strong>\u201d on the global gaming map. It utilizes two tokens in its ecosystem: Smooth Love Potions (SLPs) and Axie Infinity Shards (AXS). Basically, SLPS are earned by playing the game. Meanwhile, AXS is a governance token that gives holders the power to vote on key decisions like game functionalities and treasury funds spending. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before we evaluate if SLP would be a profitable investment in 2022 and the coming years, let\u2019s backtrack a little. We\u2019ll go into detail about the role and utility of SLP in Axie Infinity\u2019s ecosystem. In addition, we will cover the factors affecting the price of SLP and the future plans of Sky Mavis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is Axie Infinity? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Axie Infinity champions the play-to-earn gameplay model wherein players are rewarded by simply spending time playing the game. Furthermore, the players fully own their in-game characters or items as NFTs. They can sell it, earn from it or use it for gameplay. This separates Axie Infinity from 99% of today\u2019s traditional close-looped games, where digital items can only be used in-game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It came to a point that the barrier to entry was too high because the cost for buying the three Axies needed to play the game was astronomical. Meanwhile, there are investors and entrepreneurs who can easily shell out the funds needed to buy Axies but don\u2019t have the luxury of time to play. This market gap propelled the scholarship and guild programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About Smooth Love Potion: Axie Infinity\u2019s In-Game Currency<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Basically, SLP is the in-game currency at the center of Axie Infinity’s ecosystem. Every time a player wins a duel, they are rewarded in $SLP. It has no cap and is used to breed new Axies. The game burns SLP every time players breed Axies. Players breed in order to produce offspring with special abilities that make them more powerful. They can also aim for other characteristics that are desirable to other collectors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Axie Infinity, the income typically comes in the form of Smooth Love Potion (SLP). Players need to complete and enter quests, arena mode and adventure mode in order to earn SLPs. The daily quest rewards used to be 50 SLP but during the launch of the 20th competitive season, Sky Mavis announced a major economic change to earning SLP.  In essence, players will no longer earn SLP in daily quests and adventure mode but they can earn more through competitive PVP. SLP earnings will now be effectively halved, with additional rewards only available in the higher competitive tiers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sky Mavis also reduced the daily limit of SLP earned in PVE from 100 to 50. Prior to this change, players earned a total of 75 SLP per day by playing Adventure mode (50 SLP) and by clearing the daily quests (25 SLP).  However, SLP rewards in PVP now increase at a faster rate as you climb the leaderboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Axie Infinity uses MMR or Matchmaking Rating. MMR is used to determine a player\u2019s in-game skill level to place them against opponents of a roughly equal skill level. Most of the Axie population resides within the \u201ccasual\u201d tier (these are players with MMR points between 1100 and 1300). In effect, players saw reduced earnings from all game modes. Previous daily averages were around 200 SLP, but it\u2019s looking like that average will now be closer to 100-120. Moreover, in the 20th Season, sub 800 MMR players will only earn 1 SLP per win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you don\u2019t have the luxury of time to earn SLP, you can also buy them and benefit from the potential token appreciation. Players can also use their SLP to breed Axies and sell it to other players. When SLP initially launched, it didn\u2019t actually have a fluctuating value as a cryptocurrency. However, this all changed when a liquidity pool for SLP was created on Uniswap. You can easily buy this coin by first buying Ethereum from any fiat-to-crypto exchange and then transferring it to the exchange that offers to trade this coin. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

An alternative of buying and \u201cholding\u201d SLP is to \u201cstake\u201d them within liquidity pools for additional revenues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Factors Affecting the Price of SLP<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Axie Infinity took a big hit when Sky Mavis announced that their Ronin Bridge had been hacked and about $625M worth of Ethereum and USDC had been stolen. The amount was later corrected as \u201c$541M at the time of the breach,\u201d and is the second-largest crypto hack in history.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the uninitiated, the Ronin Bridge is a part of the Ronin blockchain network, so it exists alongside services like the Katana decentralized exchange, the Axie Infinity marketplace, and the AXS staking pool. Its primary function is to allow the transfer of assets from the Ronin world to the Ethereum world. Ideally, without it, you wouldn\u2019t be able to move your SLP earnings from the world of Ronin to the world of Ethereum. So its a good thing that before the Ronin Bridge, we were already using centralized exchanges like Binance<\/a> as a quasi-bridge to the outside world. Once you got your SLP earnings transferred over to Binance, you could do all sorts of things with it, including converting them into pesos. It was such a popular method, in fact, that the majority of Axie players still use that strategy to this day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So Sky Mavis is in major fire fighting mode and working double time to regain and rebuild trust in their protocol. This current predicament certainly did not help the price action of SLP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
