A prominent candidate in the 2024 presidential elections, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has decided to leave the Democrats and run independently. RFK Jr. is a Bitcoin enthusiast and owns the leading cryptocurrency as well. The American environmental lawyer said that he will be dropping his bid for nomination in the Democratic primary.
“I’m here to declare myself an independent candidate,” RFK Jr. said during a rally in Philadelphia. Interestingly, the move was being teased by the candidate for quite a number of days. American Values 2024, the super-PAC (political action committee) supporting RFK Jr., claimed in a report that the Bitcoin supporter would be the strongest independent candidate in the modern history of US elections.
The polling result from the super-PAC said that RFK Jr. will garner support from 19% of the electorate as an independent candidate when compared to 38% support for US President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. It is important to note that hundreds of candidates have declared to run independently for the presidency in 2024, and many have expressed support for Bitcoin and the digital asset sector.
Interestingly, the only remaining Democratic candidate to run against current United States President Joe Biden is Marianne Williamson. While the Kennedy name has been closely associated with the Democratic Party for generations, the stance taken by RFK Jr. on vaccines and other issues has alienated him from family members and the Democratic Party as well.
As reported earlier by BitcoinWisdom, RFK Jr. confirmed that he owns BTC worth $250K during the Bitcoin Conference in Miami in July. Many believe that the presidential candidate’s involvement with BTC is a point of political conflict with regards to the cryptocurrency sector. The 69-year-old has been quite vocal about the treatment of digital assets under the Biden administration.
RFK Jr. also announced in May this year that he would accept campaign donations in Bitcoin via the Lightning Network. He described the leading cryptocurrency as a “symbol of democracy and freedom.”
