New York City-based hedge fund Two Sigma Ventures recently announced the closing of two venture funds: Two Sigma Ventures IV (TSV IV) and Two Sigma Ventures Opportunity Fund II (TSV Opps II) with a combined value of $400 million. This aligns with the company’s aim to “propel the next era of tech innovation forward.”

According to a Wednesday’s announcement, TSV IV aims to invest in early-stage startups, and TSV Opps II focuses on growth-stage companies. Notably, the majority of the fresh capital—roughly 85%—comes from external investors, such as institutions like pension funds, hospital systems, college endowments, and non-profit foundations. The remaining 15% comes from Two Sigma’s partners and senior executives.

Interestingly, the new fundraising marks a major milestone for the firm, whose assets under management (AUM) have increased to $1.8 billion.

As Two Sigma Ventures has a long list of industries in which it invests, including enterprise SaaS, fintech, biotech, consumer tech, crypto, and DeFi, it is looking for companies working on new technologies leveraging computer advances and data science across these industries.

The firm further explains that the nw capital will enable investment in breakthrough companies and ideas that are “fundamentally changing the ways society and technology interact, transforming traditional industries, and helping to move humanity forward.”

“In the last 10 years we’ve backed over 100 companies aligned with that thesis, and are proud of the successes our founders have experienced. This new infusion of capital is the beginning of our next chapter as a business and will allow us to fund the next generation of entrepreneurs with world-changing ideas,”

Colin Beirne, partner at Two Sigma Ventures, commented on the new funds launch.

Founded in 2012, Two Sigma Ventures is the venture arm of New York’s financial sciences company Two Sigma that has more than $60 billion in assets under management. According to the VC division, it “invests in founders with a long-term vision and aims to be an enduring partner to every company in its portfolio.”Despite the ongoing crypto winter season, venture capital firms have not given up on the industry’s potential. Recently, as BitcoinWisdom reported, crypto-focused investment firm North Island Ventures recently announced the launch of a $125 million investment fund with the goal of investing in 30 to 40 early-stage projects and emerging crypto and Web3 service providers and protocols.
