Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jeane Mortenson, June 1, 1926. Gladys Baker was her mother and was financially inept to care for her. She placed Norma Jeane with foster families, with whom she lived until she was 7. Norma Jeane’s mother tried to get her back but she had a nervous breakdown shortly after. Grace McKee, her best friend, was made her legal guardian. This only lasted a few years and Norma Jeane was then sent to Hollygrove Orphanage in Los Angeles, followed by a number of foster homes before she returned to Grace McKee’s house.
